I've just had confirmation that school is fine, and we're back tomorrow.
And I quote...
The school has been checked by an engineer from OPUS. Once again our buildings have held up really well and we are able to open all classrooms tomorrow. All buildings are ok to be used. All liquefaction has been cleared from the grounds. Any hazardous areas have been fenced off so that no one has access. All hazards have been marked clearly.
The school water supply is working however we are still required to boil water - we have organised for more bottled water to be delivered to the school and we still have a back up supply. It would be great, however, if you could send your children with their own boiled water in bottles at least until Thursday when the new supply of water should arrive.
There will be a chance for parents to stay on site and have a cup of tea/coffee in the hall, should you wish to, while the children settle in.
This morning, we started a new narrative, this time working on their own narratives in pairs.
This morning for reading, rather than taking instructional groups, I thought it would be a good idea to teach the follow up activities that I have been asking the children to do, well, since February!
First up, this is how we buddy read...
(sit side by side, one reads, the other listens seeing if they got it right)
Then, I showed the class how to record stories using the Room 2 microphone, by, well, having the class read this week's big book, My Little Dog.
...then I re-visited how to find the reading games on the blog - look to the list on the right, under Room 2's flag.
After this, the groups split up and, two at a time, went on to practice taking photos of the very same book. See if you can identify which photos are which page...
We kinda ran out of time to do the rest of the story!
And then the afternoon happened.
Please keep practicing these at home.
THE FROG KING
Far, far away There was a spring: There lived a frog And the frog was king. King of the pond And he would boast That he was ruler From coast to coast.
His mighty words Spread 'cross the land Until they crossed O'er the sea's salt strand, Into the kingdom Blue and deep Where the whales swim And the dolphins leap.
There was a turtle Brave and free Said: 'I will go Test this mystery'. He swam through rivers, Lakes and fords So he could visit The great frog lord.
And when at last He reached the spring There was the frog, There was the king. 'Bow down before me' The frog said. The turtle jumped in And the frog was dead!
Paradise Island
We go to the sunshine The paradise island We go to Jamaica We crossin' the sea We go to the sunshine The paradise island Where you pick the mango Right offa the tree
Sunshine in the winter. Sunshine in the fall. Kingston Town has never ever Seen the snow at all!
We go to the sunshine The paradise island We go to Jamaica We crossin' the sea We go to the sunshine The paradise island Where you pick the mango Right offa the tree
We know the way, We know the way, We know the way, We know the way, We know the way, We know the way to be free.
Mento, ska calypso Listen to the band If you want a coconut Just pick one from the sand!
We go to the sunshine The paradise island We go to Jamaica We crossin' the sea We go to the sunshine The paradise island Where you pick the mango Right offa the tree
We know the way, We know the way, We know the way, We know the way, We know the way, We know the way to be free. (twice)
(together) We go to the sunshine... We know the way.,.
